At Patient Family Partners, we bridge the communication gap between health care providers, patients, and families. We attend medical appointments with the patient and provide a written summary of the diagnosis, upcoming tests, future medical plans, and answers to questions. We share this information with those designated by the patient/guardian. For patients who have family members who attend medical appointments with them, we are able to help that family member to navigate the process and ask the right questions as well.
The healthcare process can be stressful. When patients are experiencing anxiety or any aspect of dementia, it's harder to remember what the doctor says. Even without those issues, patients forget a large percentage of what a medical provider says.
We believe healthcare can be made less stressful and easier to navigate when those involved are able to make sure all of their questions are answered and they understand the whole plan. We also believe that communication and heartfelt respect for the patient are key to great medical care.
We aim to help patients and their loved ones navigate the healthcare process and make it less stressful by lovingly helping all involved to understand the process and the medical team's plan.
We care about our clients.
Laurie graduated from the University of California, Santa Barbara, in 1991 with a B.S. in Psychology, and graduated from the University of Kansas with her J.D and her M.S. in Health Services Administration in 1996. She is married to Michael, a medical doctor in Overland Park, Kansas, and their two sons currently attend the University of Arizona.
Laurie is passionate about helping others and she understands the anxiety that the medical care process can bring to patients and their families. She wants to reduce this anxiety by helping people navigate the system and understand and remember everything their health care providers say.
My dad, Sam Gettleman, was just about the most caring and gentle man you could ever meet. He succumbed to Lewy Body Dementia in April, 2016. It was so hard to see his memory fail him, but his beloved wife, my mom, cared for him until she broke her hip and was in rehab for many weeks. My brother, sister, and I tried to take care of them, but we were in different states. It was difficult and we didn't have the ability to attend all appointments with both of our parents. We were blessed to have dear family friends who were always there to help, but we realized it would have been so nice to have someone attend appointments and help keep track of their medical situations and plans while we could not attend.
Shannon is a dear friend and special to all who know her. In February, 2022, she was diagnosed with breast cancer and asked me to attend medical appointments with her to take notes. She knew that she had a lot on her plate at that moment, and wanted someone who could be a bit less emotional/more objective there with her to make sure she didn't forget anything. Shannon's husband was unable to attend all of her many appointments due to his work schedule, her parents live in another state but she wanted to keep them appraised and up to date, and she has two children in high school and two more on opposite sides of the country. I have taken notes and I share them with her. Then she can share those with others as she chooses.
